Cold Water Storage Tanks
Cold water storage tanks are available in either a sealed square or rectangular profile or the traditional open top circular form, which requires a discrete lid and bylaw 30 kit to be purchased separately.
The coffin style cold water storage tanks are cheaper to buy and generally easier to fit and have become more popular in recent years, they are a sealed, sturdy and compact cold water storage tank.
The advantage of the traditional circular cold water storage tank is that they can be easier to fit if replacing a like for like tank.
The cold water storage tank typically stores water from the incoming mains supply, for use in bathrooms but can also supply a vented hot water cylinder. The small 4 gallon header tank would typically be a part of the central heating system.
The pipework from the incoming mains supply is connected to a part 2 ball valve located near the top of the tank. As water is drawn off through either the taps or the hot water cylinder, the ball valve opens to allow more water in and refill the cold water storage tank at which point it then closes again. On the opposite side of the cold water storage tank is an overflow pipe which safely takes water away in the event of a ball valve failure
